13.

“The bridges and tunnels are sealed. No one leaves. We fight and win or we die! POUM!”

“Power to the marginalized!” the others shouted.

“Our time slot at the defense meeting is tomorrow night at six,” Comrade Chico continued. He was standing with Turnbull and several other comrades – including the fat guy – in the POUM command post looking over an old AAA map of Manhattan. “Gathering the factions together is much more efficient than going out to each group. The truce allows five representatives from every group to cross boundaries. The meetings have been going on all day. Every group, organization, and party in Manhattan has an assigned time to arrive and arrange the weapon and ammunition delivery. It’s not just rifles and bullets either. Grenades, rocket launchers, anti-aircraft weapons. We will make Manhattan a fortress against imperialism!”

“Power to the marginalized,” Turnbull said.

“You can help get us more stuff, right?”

“I’ll use all my influence,” Turnbull promised. He had no idea how he would play it, except that it would be by ear. He continued.

“Where do we go in Central Park?” Turnbull asked.

Comrade Chico put his finger down in Central Park right at the Great Lawn, north of where the Secure Zone wall bisected the park at 72nd Avenue.

“My nanny used to take me there to play as a little kid before the Split,” Comrade Chico said, then clearly felt the need to explain. “My sperm supplier and fetus-pod were criminal looters and wreckers and I have totally repudiated their imperialism.”

“Proper,” observed Turnbull.

“We will have to travel across a lot of factions’ turf,” Comrade Chico continued. “But the truce is on until noon tomorrow. We can get you north of the Midtown Secure Zone, and once we are there and we have made our arrangements, we can rendezvous with some friends and get inside the Zone.”

“How?” Turnbull asked.

“We have a lot of fellow travelers inside and outside of the secure zone,” Comrade Chico said. “We’re very influential.”

“Clearly,” Turnbull said, looking at the map. “We need to cross UTF territory.”

“Like I said, there’s a truce,” Comrade Chico answered. “Everyone’s coming to Central Park at some point, everyone who wants guns and ammo.”

“But do you trust the UTF not to break the truce if they see us?” Turnbull asked.

Comrade Chico looked around at the other POUM members. They seemed skeptical.

“When there’s no truce on, if they see us, they’ll kill us,” Comrade Chico said.

“Then they better not see us,” Turnbull said. “Just in case.”

“Well, the teachers have a lot of patrols and roadblocks. It will be tough.”

“I know you will prove the POUM’s worth.”

“We will, Comrade Eddie – POUM!”

“Power to the marginalized!” they shouted in unison.

Turnbull added his fist to the collective fist-raise. Gibson looked at them like they were idiots.
